The region:

The island of Sicily is 9927 sq miles and is home to over five million people. It is the largest and most populated island of the Mediterranean. Sicily is separated from the mainland by just 1.5 miles of water. Sicily has several volcanoes. Etna, in the Eastern part of Sicily, is the most famous. Etna is the tallest active volcano in Europe. Spectacular eruptions are often visible from many miles away. Red wines from sicily are dark, rich, and fruit forward because of the warm climate. 

The grape:

Nero d’Avola (nair-oh davo-la) Sicily’s most important red wine variety is often likened to Cabernet Sauvignon due to its full-bodied style and flavors of black cherry and tobacco. Expect bold and intense fruit flavors and an almost complete lack of subtlety. Black cherry and plums are the most easily identifiable flavor notes. Other fruits flavors include cherries, raspberries, and blueberries. Alongside the fruit notes expect to taste hints of liquorice, tobacco, and chile pepper.

Food: 

With its bold fruit flavors and robust tannin, Nero d’Avola is a great wine to match with rich meaty meats. Mushroom is an ideal vegetable to pair with the wine. The salty and earthy notes of the mushrooms will form a beautiful balance with the sweeter notes of Nero d’Avola.

The vineyard:

[vin-yet-TEE zah-BOO] Vigneti Zabu is a Farnese Vini winery located in Sambuca di Sicilia in Sicily, Italy. Untouched by factories and rich with ancient vineyards, Sambuca di Sicilia is a land of generations of vintners. The grape varietal, Nero d’Avola translates directly to ‘Black of Avola,’ a reference to the grape’s distinctive dark colouring. During the Middle Ages, Nero d’Avola was used to add colour and body to wines in Italy; today however, it is used for single varietal wines, full in body and flavour. The grape was once frequently traded of the coast of the island, in the port town of Avola, hence the origins of its name.

The wine:

Intense aroma of red fruit, balsamic, and floral notes. Warm on palate, long finish, aftertaste of woodland flowers.
